Course Objective

To analyze the architectural environment in relation to current developments and context in a multifaceted way (conceptual, urban, cultural, social, economic and historical aspects), to analyze a research-based design project at the end of the creative thinking process.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the concepts of historical environment and context
2   Being able to identify the spatial equivalents of requirements of the historical environment and program
3   Ability to determine design priorities such as environmental analysis, programming and land selection within the framework of the given design problem
4   Ability to develop design priorities on an architectural concept
5   Ability to express the main idea of the architecture produced visually, in writing and verbally through the relationships established with the historical environment, space organization, façade language and architectural space components.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The learning process develops through project / problem-based learning.Students develop answers to the spatial problems / questions directed to them and progress with criticism.The learning process of the student is observed and recorded with the criticisms given during the course, midretm jury (midterm submission) and final jury (final submission).

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Evaluation will be made within the framework of;
1) Ability to analyse and interpret the given context in multiple ways
2) Investigating the architectural design problem in a versatile way
3) Being able to develop and design a medium complexity architectural program requirement and its spatial counterparts within the framework of a main idea with original and comprehensive solutions
4) To provide the conceptual depth, clarity and continuity of the main idea throughout the process
5) Criteria to express the project process in a qualified way in visual, written and verbal environments

Research Assignment (LO1, LO2): It contains the analysis of the given urban context, the interpretation of an architectural program to be developed from the context, developing a context-specific concept idea and also other in-class exercises.

Midterm Jury (LO1, LO2, LO3): It is a midterm exam that covers the evaluation of students' preliminary ideas about the field and the program and their half-term developments. A student who does not join the midterm jury without a documentable excuse, cannot attend the final jury.

Final Jury (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5): It is a final exam that covers an assessment of the entire process of developing a research-based architectural design project and handling the architectural design problem in multiple ways.

Course Policies and Rules

Participating in Group Analysis Studies in the field and presenting Individual Case Studies will be taken into account in the process evaluation.

Receiving signature approval from 4 of the 7 individual critiques to be taken during the semester by faculty members or staff is a prerequisite for Final Submission. Those who do not meet this requirement will not be able to make Final Delivery.

Appearing in the Interim Jury is mandatory and is a prerequisite for making the Final Submission.

Necessary materials, tools and equipment must be brought to each lesson.

Attendance at classes is a must.
