Course Objective

In this course, it's aimed to examine the relation of social and individual health with urban area, within the scope of international and national literature and examples, and to discuss the impact of physical environment characteristics on active living.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to define health and healthy cities concepts within national and international literature.
2   to compare the policies and spatial arrangements of healthy cities of the world and Türkiye.
3   to interpret the physical space qualities that promote social and individual health.
4   to analyse the active living requirements in urban area.
5   to evaluate the extent to which legal regulations support active life.

Course Contents

1 -Introduction, explaining the course intents and evaluation methods - Discussing the concepts of health and pandemic, transferring current data
2 - The relationship between social and individual health studies and urban planning
3 - What is the Healthy City Movement What are the conditions for being a healthy city
4 -Healthy urban planning principles
5 - Health policies and spatial practices in healthy cities with examples from the world and Türkiye
6 - Active life and physical activity as a requirement of a healthy city - Physical activity and urban area requirements by gender, age and socio-demographic structure
7 Midterm
8 - Walking as a type of physical activity and its relationship with health Homework topics and study groups will be determined at this stage.
9 - Macro-scale physical environmental characteristics associated with physical activity and walking Identifying the cities to focus on for the student groups
10 - Micro-scale physical environmental characteristics associated with physical activity and walking Identifying the healthy city parameters to focus on for the students groups
11 -Legal spatial arrangements and plan decisions that promote active living in urban area Discussing the results and evaluations of the students groups

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through conference presentations and literature readings. Besides midterm exam, students will be required to prepare homework in the semester.

Assessment Criteria

Description and Comparison will be evaluated by the Midterm Evaluation.
Interpretation and Analysis will be evaluated by the Student Assignment.
Interpretation, Analysis, and Evaluation are evaluated by the Final Exam.

A midterm exam will be held throughout the semester and an assignment will be expected to be submitted. At assignment, student groups will be formed and a group work will be expected.
In the evaluation of homework presentation, it is obligatory for the student to present the homework on the specified dates. A student who does not make presentation his/her homework on the specified date will not be evaluated even if he/she has submitted his/her homework.

Course Policies and Rules

The course has a method that can be described by conference presentations and readings. Students are expected to analyze and interpret the knowledge they have acquired through theoretical explanations over a city. During the semester, students will be asked to prepare an assignment based on group work.
