Course Objective

The course primarily aims at examining the structure of and change in the retail sector of economically developed countries through considering the planning practice of urban retail areas in global scale and scrutinising the dynamics of the change in Turkish retail sector. Secondly, the course aims at orienting the students towards several researches in which the components of retail sector will be considered through the solution proposals based on the analysis of existing situation and problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students will be able to define the concept of consumption, its change during the historical process and impacts on the life styles,
2   will be able to explain the development of new spaces of consumption and their economic, social and environmental effects,
3   will be able to list the structure of the trade sector in Türkiye and the dynamics underlying its change,
4   will be able to summarise the general structure of the retail trade sector in the pre and post-1980 periods,
5   will be able to analyse one of the components of urban commercial structure comprehensively.

1 General Information about the course content. What is consumption
2 The change in the concept of consumption within the historical process
3 Impacts of consumption on the life styles and the emergence of the concept of modern consumption. Determination of the contents of homework which will be prepared by the student groups, giving information about the research methods.
4 The emergence of consumption society, the development of the new spaces of consumption, economic, social and environmental effects
5 The structure of the retail sector and its change in global scale The development of retail sector in the USA and in Europe
6 The structure of retail sector in Türkiye and the dynamics underlying the change
7 The general structure of Türkiye in the pre and post 1980 period
8 Internationalisation of retailing and the actors of the change.
9 Midterm Examination
10 General Overview of the Legislation Concerning Retail Trade Sector in Türkiye. Continuing the researches of homework submission. Answering and discussing the questions of students regarding the homework topics.
