Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce the topics of Operations Research (OR) to students taking this course for the first time and to show how OR is applied to real-life problems. Students are expected to acquire the skills to mathematically model and solve deterministic problems using computers and learn how to make smart business decisions from an optimization point of view.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to develop linear programming and integer programming models for solving industrial engineering problems.
2   Ability to solve linear programming and integer programming problems with appropriate methods
3   Ability to perform sensitivity analysis in linear programming problems
4   Ability to create and interpret solutions using optimization software

Course Contents

1 Introduction to operations research, modeling approach in decision making, steps in operations research study
2 Modeling with linear programming and graphical solution method, examination of special cases encountered in graphical solution method
3 Linear programming modeling examples
4 Solution of linear programming models using LINGO optimizasyon software
5 Sensitivity analysis in graphical method, examples of sensitivity analysis with LINGO software
6 Computation steps of the simplex solution algorithm used in linear programming
7 Detection of special solutions (alternative optimum solution, unbounded/infeasible/degenerate solutions) in simplex algorithm, Big-M method, Duality Theory
8 Goal programming and modeling examples
9 Modeling with integer programming and modeling examples
10 Integer programming examples
11 Solution methods for integer programming, branch and bound algorithm
12 Transportation and assignment problems
13 Transportation and assignment problems
14 Project presentations
