Course Objective

Can complete solid waste sampling; can select solid waste disposal site selection; have fundamental information and knowledge about collection/transfer/transport of solid waste; composting, landfilling, incineration, and pyrolysis of solid waste; can complete the necessary design at an intermediate level, can calculate the investment and operational cost of the related facilities, can compare the systems and their modifications.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Can define the general and specific properties of the wastes, can list the facility types used for waste management, can define their design parameters
2   Can explain the reasons for the design features, can comment on the changes in design parameters, can solve problems related with facility design
3   Ca use the wate properties and design parameters, can decide on the proper technology and site selection, can design the components of disposal facilities
4   Can compare different technologies and can critisize recommended technology
5   Can design the facilities in an intermediate level, can propose about the current technologies to improve or modificate them
6   Can recommend a system, can defense this system, can compare it with the others, can explain the features used in the design

To be announced.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

After instructing the fundementals of the phenomenon, the general criteria on waste technologies are introduced. Each of the conventional technologies are strongly discussed and their boundaries are recognized. The design of the facilities for different wastes are required from the student, and they are expected to work as groups. The results of the studies are also presented and discussed in the class.
