Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide the teaching and the learning of concepts related to algebra. Thus, they are able to carry out their mathematics courses effectively

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Know how to teach algebra.
2   Know student mistakes, misconceptions and difficulties about algebra and ways to overcome them
3   Use the historical development of the basic concepts of algebra, teaching daily life examples and relate algebraic concepts with other courses.
4   Use appropriate strategies and materials while teaching algebra.
5   Understand and comment on student thinking about algebra topics.

3 Pre-algebraic period, historical development and arithmetic-algebra relation
4 Algebra in Secondary School Mathematics Teaching Curriculum
5 An overview of algebra teaching and learning
6 Appropriate strategies, methods and techniques for algebra teaching
7 Representations, analogies and materials that can be used in algebra teaching
8 Course overview, evaluation and midterm examination
9 Student difficulties and possible misconceptions about concepts of algebra
10 Student difficulties and possible misconceptions about concepts of algebra
11 Historical development of basic concepts of algebra
12 Examples of daily life related to algebraic concepts and relation with other courses
13 Presentations of the plans prepared by the students regarding the teaching of a concept of algebra, discussion
