Course Objective

The aim of this course is to familiarize with popular / popular operating systems and to learn the history of operating systems. It also aims to examine in detail the topics such as operating system concept and elements, operating system architecture, functions of operating systems, types of operating systems, input and output units, and protection and security in operating systems.

1   Define the operating system concept and its elements
2   Know commonly used and national operating systems
3   Define operating system architectures (Von Neumann and Harvard)
4   Explain the differences between operating systems
5   Define transaction management, process management, memory management and memory management from operating system tasks
6   Define and manage deadlocks
7   Define file system concept and management
8   Can install different operating systems
9   Know mobile operating systems
10   Evaluate operating systems for security and usability

1 Introducing the course and explaining the rules of the course in detail; Basic concepts in and history of operating systems
2 Operating system types (time-sharing, real-time systems, multi-user systems) and popular operating systems (Windows, Linux, Unix, Android, Mac OS)
3 General structure of operating system (Kernel, resource management, drivers and operating system, application software, BIOS)
4 Von Neuman and Harvard architects and their differences
5 Process management (process states, process timing, operations on processes, timing types, scheduling algorithms)
6 File system (file concept, file properties and objects, file types, file structure)
7 File system (file access methods, file allocation methods)
8 General Review, Course Evaluation, Midterm Exam
9 Deadlocks (necessity cases, deadlock management)
10 Input-output systems (drivers, standard input-output units, other input units, other output units)
11 Protection and security
12 Installing and updating operating systems (Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac OS X)
13 Installing and updating operating systems (Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac OS X)

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This basic instructional approach is based on narrative technique. It is the basic teaching method that is mainly taught by the responsible teaching staff through the presentation of the theoretical information. In addition, an activity-based teaching method will also be used by exploring the structure of microprocessors in order to better understand the structure of operating systems.

Course Policies and Rules

It is not compulsory to attend classes during the semester. If the evaluation is done through the project, 10% points can be deducted per day for the assignments submitted after the date announced by the course instructor. Weekly assignments or projects delivered over a total of 4 days will not be considered. On the other hand, the course instructor may consider giving up bonus points of up to 10% to students for positive situations such as positive and active participation, regular attendance to classes and participation in class activities.
