Course Objective

The aim of this course is to explore the complex relationships between music and society by considering the studies based on sociology and ethnomusicology. Musical practices and discourses, ranging from western music to traditional Turkish art music, folk music to popular music, will be examined in terms of the social contexts. Special attention is given to the issues regarding musical life in Türkiye (historical, contemporary, etc.).

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students who succesfully complete this course should be able to: recognize the relationship between musicology and social sciences.
2   grasp the relationship between music studies and sociology as a social science.
3   describe basic concepts and theories in sociology.
4   determine the difference of music studies based on sociological perspective from other disciplines.
5   discuss historical or contemporary musical facts as the practical and discursive fields.

7 Discussion (the Turkish state's music policies during the early republican period)
8 Cultural pluralism, musical value, common sense, elitism, ethnocentrism
9 Aesthetics in musicology: autonomous and heteronomous perspectives
10 Social context and musical text
11 Psychology, social psychology, personality, self
12 Psychology of music; perception, emotion, affection
13 Discussion (Associative structure in the perception of music: Yanik)

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The courses are based on important texts such as books, chapters and articles considering the basic concepts of sociology. Thus, the student will be able to grasp and discuss the relationship between a sociological concept and a musical fact.
