General Description

History

Department of Comparative Literature started offering its MA program (with a thesis) in 2016. Language of instruction is Turkish. The MA curriculum is distinctively multidisciplinary coming from diverse fields of study such as language, culture, philosophy and other related fields of study.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of Comparative Literature Graduate Program is to qualify specialists, intellectuals and academics who will able to assess critically and compare with Turkish literature the theoretical, historical, linguistic, cultural and philosophical dimensions of different cultures and literatures that are essential for our country in the process of globalization.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Be able to use their knowledge and competences regarding the theories of comparative literature as an academic field and discipline
2   Be in command of the requirements of interdisciplinary approaches of Comparative Literature Studies (philosophy, history of religions, psychoanalysis, cultural studies etc.)
3   Be able to use methods of academic studies, research and analysis
4   Be able to use their theoretical and applied knowledge they have gained about different cultures, cultural transfer and interaction
5   Be able to apply approaches of literary, critical, historical, linguistic studies and other related disciplines to text analysis
6   Have gained a critical view concerning the application of Western theories and methods of analysis to Turkish literature
7   Have acquired academic and ethical values concerning research, data gathering, interpreting of data, writing and publication in the field of Comparative Literature
8   Be able to produce qualified translations by developing strategies concerning literary translation
9   Be able to use analytic strategies in the process of independent thinking and use them in order to produce new ideas and projects in critical and creative processes
10   Be able to apply their knowledge and critical perspective gained in Comparative Literature Studies to other academic disciplines
11   Have gained a world view that is aware of issues like language, religion, gender, cultural and gender identity and differences
12   Be able to use the knowledge and competences they have gained with a sense of professional and ethical responsibility and to develop their competence of independent acting by taking initiatives

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related master s degree enables the holder to exercise the profession. Postgraduates of the master s programme assume the title of experts in comparative literature and are competent to exercise professions in publishing, literature criticism, text production, editing and similar fields.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

The Master's program in the Department of Comparative Literature has 120 ECTS and the duration is four semesters. The program consists of compulsory courses, elective courses, and a thesis. Thesis is graded on a pass/fail basis.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course is defined in the Course Description Form which is prepared by related faculty member/s and included in the information package. Exams and course success notes are subject to the relevant articles of the DEU Regulation on Graduate Education.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master s Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 AKTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), field study (3 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
