General Description

History

Department of Medical Informatics was established at 2004 as a multidisciplinary department of Institute of Health Science by approval of The Council of Higher Education. Our academic staff are from Medicine Faculty, Engineering Faculty and Science Faculty. Medical Informatics Msc programme started education at 2005. Program duration is 2 and half years (1 semester scientific preparation, 2 semesters course and 2 semesters thesis study) . Program language is Turkish.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 60 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS). In total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

Medical Informatics Msc programme started education at 2005.The objectives of this programme are obtaining knowledge about Medical Informatics terminology and basic theories, improving presentation skills, developing ability to follow, interpret and present domain-specific scientific research, acquiring knowledge and skills on basic research methods in Medical Informatics. Program contains 4 Compulsory Course each semester and elective courses in different fields. Students may take courses from different programs and university.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To have knowledge of the principles of knowledge management in health.
2   To have knowledge of information technologies and their applications in the field of health.
3   To have adequate background on medical informatics, statistics, computer programming, elementary medical science and so on.
4   To have knowledge of mathematics, elementary medical science, statistical data analysis, current software and computer programming at the level that is required for programming.
5   To be able to define problems, collect necessary data, analyze and interpret them and to find alternative solutions based on scientific methods used in the field of medical informatics.
6   To be able to take responsibility as an individual or as an interdisciplinary team member with creative and broad viewpoint, to work efficiently and to use time effectively.
7   To be able to plan and supervise projects with the ability of analytical thinking.
8   To be able to survey the literature, assess the acquired knowledge critically and use databases and other data sources.
9   To be able to follow developments on science and technology and to renew the knowledge of medical informatics with the consciousness about lifelong learning.
10   To inform authorities and institutions in the area of medical informatics; to express ideas and proposals towards solutions of problems verbally and in writing.
11   To be able to introduce and apply projects in terms of civic engagement.
12   To be able to follow the current news on medical informatics and to communicate with their colleagues through English language.
13   To be able to use computer software and information-communication technologies at the level that is required for medical informatics.
14   To be able to tell theoretical and technical information easily to both experts in detail and non-experts in basic and comprehensible way.
15   To set social, scientific and ethical values throughout the process of collecting, evaluating, and interpreting data on the field of medical informatics.
16   To have enough awareness about social equality, quality culture, protection of cultural values, environmental protection, occupational health and safety by being conscious.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment of students was done with 2 midterm examination, 1 final examination, homework and project studies. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
