General Description

History

Department of Oncology was established at 1997 as a department of Institute of Health Science by approval of The Council of Higher Education. Provide the graduation since 2010. Who are graduated from medical faculty, Genetics and Molecular Genetics, Chemical Faculty, Biochemisrty, Biology, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Tooth Medicine and Bioenginering can apply the Msc program of Basic Oncology.
Translational perspective of education, research and laboratory services, which is a branch of a department. Our academic personals are from basic (Pathology) and clinical (Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, Preventive Oncology, Hematology, Bioinformatic, Laboratory Animals) departments of Medical Faculty and Oncology Institute members. Basic Oncology Msc program has been started education at 2000. Program duration is 2 years (1 year is course, 1 year is thesis study). The language of program is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (2 ECTS), and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS) credits. In total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

Basic Oncology Msc program has been started education at 1997. The objectives of this program are to obtain knowledge about Basic Oncology information and knowledge about the basic terminology, presentation skill development, to follow scientific developments and research in the field of knowledge and skills to have.Program contains compulsory course of oncology department and elective courses in different basic oncology fields. Students may take courses from different programs and universities.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Acquire basic and clinical cancer knowledge and ability to practice of the basic oncology laboratory techniques.
2   Capable of prepare and present oral and written presentations in the field of Oncology.
3   Be able to perform works within the framework of the ethical rules in the field of oncology.
4   Acquire use the information in the field of oncology research required.*Be able to understand cancer at the molecular level.*Be able to know the diversity of biology and genetics of cancer and normal processes
5   Capable of apply to basic laboratory methods in cancer research.*Be able to obtain and store biological samples in appropriate conditions*Capable of implementing basic PCR techniques.*Capable of having basic cancer cell culture techniques.
6   Acquire epidemiological and statistical information associated with cancer research.*Acquire of information about basic statistical methods specific to cancer research.*Capable of taking of records of objective data suitable for statistical analysis.
7   Be able to gain ability to obtain information on other issues related to cancer.*Acquire basic knowledge of cancer biochemistry and immunology*Capable of study in a team of researchers in the field of experimental oncology
8   Be able to gain ability to apply, write and presents his thesis, and converts it for publication.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

The program during the first year course equivalent of 60 ECTS credits per semester must take courses. In our program, there are compulsory and elective courses form our department. Students must take at least 120 ECTS credits and 60 ECTS credits of 120 credits from their Basic Oncology Masters thesis. Elective courses are over 25%. There is no compulsory training course. 13 compulsory courses are from our departments in the program. The other courses in this program are elective.

Assessment of students was done with 1 midterm examination, 1 final examination, and homework and project studies. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
