General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University, Department of General Linguistics was founded in 2000 to conduct scientific research on all aspects of language and to train scientists that would further the studies in linguistics. In addition to the main areas of research in linguistics such as phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, the department also focuses on other areas which emerged as a result of interdisciplinary interactions, including but not limited to sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, applied linguistics, language acquisition, discourse analysis, and historical linguistics. Being aware of the significance of theory in scientific research, the department conducts studies using both the generative and the functional theories of linguistics, and provides the students with the main tenets thereof. The department also focuses on applied studies with its own Phonetics Laboratory, and aims to collaborate with the Department of Computer Engineering and the Language Research and Teaching Centre (DEDAM) in such studies.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Head of the Departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Our department continues its educational and scientific activities with 7 instructors. Moreover the department serves with a full accessible Department Library (Prof. Dr. Semiramis YĞCIOĞLU Library).

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Developing and using expert knowledge in linguistics based on graduate qualifications framework and relating this knowledge with other disciplines and to understand the interaction between linguistics and other disciplines
2   Obtaining expert knowledge on phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, language acquisition, language typology and discourse analysis and comparing Turkish with other language from a typological perspective
3   Interpreting and evaluating information on language and brain, and interdisciplinary studies in this field
4   Obtaining theoretical and practical knowledge in language acquisition and Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language
5   Questioning the relationship between media and language, obtaining knowledge in media literacy and comparing linguistic and cultural elements in different cultures
6   Reading academic publications in linguistics as required by the field and to evaluate the new information from a holistic point of view and solving problems of linguistics using scientific research methodology

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates of the department may obtain positions in various institutions as supervisors, redactors, editors, and auditors. Among our previous graduates, some of them work as redactors in publishing houses, as free-lance translators, as language instructors in some private colleges and in some universities. Also, some of our graduates continued their academic career mostly in applied linguistics (Turkish as a Foreign Language) and neurolinguistics.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

The courses in our department are taken termly. There is no prerequisited courses for the program. Each and every student must take 30 ECTS for each term and these courses are selected among the courses stated in that term.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and field study (3 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
