General Description

History

The Department of Economics was founded in 1992 within the Faculty of Business.
The Department of Economics defines its mission as to offer a highly innovative reseach-oriented academic education on universal standards. The fields in the Department are, Economic Policy, Economic Theory, International Economics and Economic Development and Economic History. With its young and distinguished staff, the Deparment aims to acquaint its students with recent methods, approaches and theories in economics, and to train them as the future practioneers of the discipline. The medium of instruction is English.

Qualification Awarded

Graduates of the (UOLP-Suny Albany) Joint Programme will be awarded with Economics, Bachelor's Degree from both Universities.

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to graduate from the Joint Programme, students have to successfully complete all courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.) of 2.00/4.00 and 240 ECTS. Graduation from the SUNY Albany University requires the achievement of 3.00/4.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.).

Profile of the Programme

Students enrolled in the Joint Programme will study the first two years in Dokuz Eylül University, and the last two years in the SUNY Albany University. In the initial two years of their study, the students are expected to take the main courses of the Economics programme of Dokuz Eylül University. In their third and fourth years, students take courses from the SUNY Albany University leading to the opportunity of receiving two bachelor degrees in a four years study period. The Joint Programme is aimed at giving the prospective students the opportunity of studying abroad. The instruction of language is English in both programmes. Students will develop critical analytical skills through a wide variety of courses that allow them to explain, compare, and generalize about economic phenomena at local, national and global levels, employing key tools and methodologies of the discipline. Courses are designed to inform, provoke, and inspire students to think critically about significant historical, political and social issues in contemporary world economics. The structure of the programme is designed to provide a broad based training in both economic theory and practice. The objective is fostering excellence in education by integrating the benefits of studying in two prestigious Universities; Dokuz Eylül University and the SUNY Albany University within a joint programme.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Make use of other disciplines that economics is closely related (law, sociology, business) and to have the basic knowledge of these disciplines.
2   Inform authorities and institutions in the area of economics; to be able to transfer ideas and proposals supported by quantitative and qualitative data about the problems verbally and in writing to experts and non-experts, either in Turkish or in English.
3   Read, write and communicate in English at least at CERF B2 Level, efficiently.
4   Use computer skills at an advanced level. (European Computer Driving Licence Advanced Level).
5   To take responsibility as a team leader and member to solve multidimensional problems.
6   Build up on acquired knowledge, skills and qualifications for professional and social uses.
7   To possess ethical and social values in issues, process, research of economics.
8   Examine, interpret data and assess concepts and ideas with scientific methods in the field of economics.
9   To acquire knowledge on the interaction mechanisms and decision making processes of economic units, properties and properties of markets, market failure, reasons and methods of government intervention in such cases, structures and properties of national and international institutions; and to be able to assess and conduct analyses on these topics.
10   To acquire knowledge on the national and international economic literature and economic policies and be able to follow innovations in the field of economics and to form and criticize economic policy suggestions related to economic problems.
11   To possess knowledge and skills in deep required by at least one field under the discipline of economics.
12   To be able to understand and comment on economic data by applying econometric techniques.
13   To acquire knowledge about types of enterprises, various industries, business environment, major functions of business administration and understand the relationship between these functions.
14   To acquire knowledge and skills regarding accounting, processes of accounting, uniform system of accounts and its applications; finance function, feasibility analysis and financial statement analysis

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of Department of Economics are employed in a wide range of positions in both the private and public sectors. Our graduates can acquire positions in different fields of the private sector, such as banking, consulting firms, audit companies and many of them are employed in important foreign enterprises. In public sector, our graduates can be employed at Banks, Central Bank, and any public institution that can be applied with Public Personnel Exam (KPSS).

In order to meet international standards, four course categories have been defined in the undergraduate program of Economics. Faculty Core Courses (24%): Calculus, Statistics, Fundamentals of Information Technology, Sociology, Humanities, and Introduction to Law that aim to support core courses of the profession. Integrated Language Skills, Advanced Writing Skills, Communication Skills, and Social Responsibility Project that aim to develop transferable skills. Departmental Core Courses (38%): These are the fundamental courses of the profession. Departmental Electives (30%): Courses aiming to extend education in accordance with the students relevant area of interest. Unrestricted Electives (9%): Courses aiming at providing the students a broad flexibility for individual development and career choices. These courses also seek to enrich the students perspective and intellectual level.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Faculty of Business Educational and Examinational Regulations. (http://isletme.deu.edu.tr/kurumsal/ana-menu-ogrenciler/deu-isletme-fakultesi-sinav-ve-uygulama-esaslari). The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is DD. Other grades; Incomplete (I) accorded to students who, although otherwise successful, have failed to complete the required assignments for a course. A student receiving an incomplete grade for any course must make up for the deficiencies within 30 days after submitting the grades to Registrars Office. Otherwise, the grade I automatically becomes FF. Satisfactory (S) accorded to students who are successful in non-credit courses. Unsatisfactory (U) accorded to students who are unsuccessful in non-credit courses. Exempt ( E) is given to students who transfer to the program from another, after the equivanlence of courses they have taken previously is recommended by the dean/director and approved by the faculty board. This grade may provide an exemption for a particular course at the program.
No Attendance (NA) is given upon failure to attend classes or complete practical or applied components of a course. (NA) configures in CGPA as FF.

Graduation Requirements

The Bachelors Degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum and have a minnimum Cumulative. Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS.
