General Description

History

Department of Psychology at the Institute of Social Sciences, Dokuz Eylul University has started to accept students into its master degree program with thesis in 2013-2014 academic years. Master degree program in Psychology is based on scientific research and practice-oriented curriculum. The aim of the program is to help students to acquire skills, experience and specialized knowledge beyond the students basic knowledge of psychology, to produce information by following up the current literature and research findings, to transfer and apply effectively the information to related persons/organizations. The medium of education is 30% English and the master program consists of compulsory courses about scientific research and methods and elective courses oriented towards sub-fields of psychology.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Psychology Master Program targets students to have detailed and deep theoretical knowledge on the concepts, theories and approaches needed and related to sub-fields of psychology interested by students beyond BA education and also to gain necessary skills and experience in order to apply and adjust the information into the related field of psychology. Besides, psychologists are aimed to master the research methods used in the field and to be able to apply and adjust them, to produce information through them, to follow and evaluate international literature, to adapt this knowledge by being aware of current situations, and to have ethical sensitivity necessary during research and practice. Education program consists of scientific research and methods, obligatory courses on statistics, and specific and elective courses related to the sub-fields of psychology.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To describe fundamental concepts and terms in his/her mastery area of psychology and the history and recent developments in that field.
2   To describe the basic assumptions of fundamental theoretical approaches and perspectives in his/her mastery area of psychology and compare these theories by expressing the similarities and differences, contributions and limitations.
3   To follow developments in his/her mastery area of psychology in the world and in Turkey.
4   To adopt knowledge about qualitative and quantitative research methods, and to use reach skills and experiences of research design configuration, analysis method selection, data collection, data interpretation, statistical reporting, and discussion.
5   To have awareness and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and social events and problems and to provide explanations and solutions based on his/her knowledge of psychology.
6   To adopt the ethical principles and values of psychology and the ones specific to his/her mastery area of psychology, work in accordance with these principles and realize ethical dilemmas and could take his/her decisions on the basis of the relevant ethical principles.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related master's degree enables the holder to exercise the profession. With education in general and subfields of psychology, graduates of MA in Psychology might work as psychologist with MA degree in various public (e.g., ministries of health, justice, internal affairs, education, family and social politics etc) and private (e.g., psychological counseling, care centers, special education etc.) organizations. In addition, graduates might prefer academic career in universities by continuing PhD program in psychology.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

The Master's program in the Department of Psychology has 120 ECTS and the duration is four semesters. The program consists of compulsory courses, selective courses, and a thesis. Students must take 2 compulsory courses and 5 elective courses. G: Fall Semester, B: Spring Semester - The language of the program is 30% English. - The program consists of compulsory and elective courses. Students are required to take at least 30 ECTS courses per semester, including seminars, specialization courses and thesis work. - Students are expected to complete, 1 compulsory 3 selectives (2 Turkish, 1 English) in the first semester, 1 compulsory and 2 selective courses (1 Turkish, 1 English) In the second semester in addition to seminar and specialization courses. -. From the third semester until graduation, thesis work and specialization courses must be registered. - Under the program, there are 3 sub-fields that are also specified in the diploma supplement: 1. Clinical psychology, 2. Social psychology and 3. Experimental psychology. When the following conditions are met, students will be given a diploma in addition to a field orientation certificate. The conditions for this back-up document are as follows: a. Students must take and successfully complete one compulsory course in statistics and research methods each semester. Compulsory courses, first Semester SBE 5001 and second Semester PSİ 5026. b. Students are required to choose at least 5 courses specific to the clinical, social or experimental psychology sub-field mentioned above in 2 semesters and complete the courses successfully. - Selective courses in clinical psychology: First Semester PSİ 5027, PSİ 5029, PSİ 5031, PSİ 5033, PSİ 5035; second semester consists of PSİ 5022, PSİ 5024, PSİ 5030, PSİ 5032, PSİ 5034, PSİ 5036, PSİ 5038 coded courses. - Selective courses in social psychology: First Semester PSİ 5037, PSİ 5039, PSİ 5041, PSİ 5045 and PSİ 5052; second semester consists of PSİ 5022, PSİ 5024, PSİ 5040, PSİ 5042, PSİ 5044 and PSİ 5048 coded courses. - Selective courses in experimental psychology: First Semester PSİ 5047, PSİ 5049 and PSİ 5050, second semester consists of PSİ 5022, PSİ 5054, PSİ 5056 coded courses. c. In addition to completing the seminar, specialization and thesis study courses, students are required to conduct a thesis in the relevant field among the 3 sub-fields defined in the condition (b) as the thesis topic. It is finalized with the approval of the thesis finalization jury that the thesis topic belongs to the relevant sub-field.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 53 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
