Course Objective

The course covers recent theories, models and research results within the field of advanced cognitive psychology. Lectures will focus on the aspects of cognition, such as perception, attention, learning, memory, social cognition and cognitive development. The main approach of the course is associated with examination of cognitive psychology within a contemporary frame.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Will be able to define key terms, concepts and theories in cognitive psychology
2   To be able to describe cognitive mechanisms related to perception, attention, learning, memory, problem solving, creativity and emotion
3   To be able to define cognitive impairment and learn about cognitive development
4   To be able to develop knowledge of basic and advanced research methods in cognitive psychology
5   To be able to present their research ideas effectively and acquire specific skills for research in cognitive psychology
6   To be able to have knowledge of current topics and follow recent researches in cognitive psychology
7   To be able to critical analyse and reflect around current research and debates within modern cognitive psychology

1 Introduction to Advanced Cognitive Psychology The description of cognitive psychology and main topics in cognitive psychology
2 Cognitive Development Focus on cognitive development from infancy through late childhood/early adolescence
3 Perception What does perception mean What are: bottom-up processing and top-down processing in perception.
4 Attention and Conscious Focus on cognitive processes and brain areas involved in attention and conscious.
5 Learning and Memory Focus on cognitive processes and brain areas involved in learning and memory; memory types; memory disorders and emotional memory systems.
6 Thinking and Language Focus on cognitive processes and brain areas involved in thinking and language.
7 Problem Solving and Creativity Focus on cognitive processes and brain areas involved in problem solving and creativity.
8 Emotion and Cognition Focus on description of emotion, related issues and emotional learning.
9 Research Methods in Cognitive Psychology Focus on various research methods and experimental designs used in cognitive psychology.
10 Social Cognition Contemporary social cognition theory and research on how people organize and interpret social information in their environment.
11 Contemporary Issues in Cognitive Psychology I Focus on topics includes addiction, culture and evolution in social behaviour, personal relationships, anti-social behaviour, judgment and decision-making, prejudice and discrimination; their cognitive basis and interpretation of contemporary researches in this area.
12 Contemporary Issues in Cognitive Psychology II Focus on topics includes addiction, culture and evolution in social behaviour, personal relationships, anti-social behaviour, judgment and decision-making, prejudice and discrimination; their cognitive basis and interpretation of contemporary researches in this area.
13 Brain disorders and cognition I A review of the patterns of impaired cognitive abilities present in psychiatric and neurologic patients
14 Brain disorders and cognition II A review of the patterns of impaired cognitive abilities present in psychiatric and neurologic patients

Assignments, Midterm and Final Exams

Assessment Criteria

In total, one midterm, one final and one homework will be conducted. There will be open-ended questions in the levels of information, comprehension, analysis, interpretation and synthesis for all exams.
