General Description

History

The Department of Building Science, which has been operating under the Department of Architecture of Dokuz Eylul University, Faculty of Architecture and one of the important educational institutions of Türkiye with its academic staff and educational programs continuously renewed academic study programs since 1982, aims to develop a thinking methodology that focused on Design with its master and doctorate programs. Within this thinking methodology, he carries out studies on topics such as architectural design, architectural theory and criticism, building typology, architectural competitions, design for all, children and architecture, computer-aided design and architecture, biodesign, design in the context of sustainable environment. The graduate programs in Building Design Programme aim to train qualified architects who are modern, sensitive to public and ethical values and also contribute to the development of the professional environment through their research and design at a universal level.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylül University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Architecture Architectural Design Doctorate Programs offer the students to deepen the knowledge and skills that they gained in the undergraduate school; to obtain the awareness of the interactive relationship of the architectural theory and praxis; and to develop intellectuality in an original and significant contribution to the field.

For admission to the Architectural Design Master Of Science Program, the students are required to have a Bachelor s Degree in Architecture.

Architectural Design Master of Science Programs recruits students in the specific dates twice a year according to the academic calendar (January-February and August-September).

Facilities Of The Department:

The staff and students of the Architectural Design Master of Science Program uses the classrooms, studios, laboratories and technical facilities of Dokuz Eylül University Department of Architecture. Besides, there is a classroom in the building which is used only by Architectural Design Program.

1   Evaluate the latest knowledge, the most advanced skills and techniques in the field of research with a systematic understanding and approach to solve problems and bring innovation; conducting research on an original topic, developing new methods / designs / ideas / practices or adapting and using them to a different field
2   Develop new ideas and methods with high level competencies such as creative and critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, learning processes
3   Comprehend and use the knowledge and skills of the research field in interdisciplinary / multidisciplinary / transdisciplinary research strategies, tactics, techniques and approaches; relate the research field to its social, cultural, economic and historical contexts
4   Design advanced and original research by making conceptual-theoretical insights into architecture / by conducting design research at different scales based on current-new practices / by using innovative design methods and technologies

6   Use the theoretical and practical knowledge of the specialization field by integrating cognitive and practical skills in professional practice
7   Present theoretical insights that enhance effectiveness of the field of professional practice; use research methods related to the field at an advanced level
8   Conduct research in academic and professional environments with the highest level of competence, independence, integrity and honesty; contribute into technological, social and cultural progress
9   Have knowledge and understanding about research, publication ethics, learning, teaching and evaluation strategies; establish and maintain research within the framework of academic honesty and professional ethics; provide solution to social, cultural, scientific and ethical problems and to support the development of these values; contribute into recognized knowledge in the field by publishing the outputs of an original research in national and international journals

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Architecture graduates, who has Ph. D. degree, work wide range areas that profession gives opportunity to perform. Some of them keep going to work academic and start to work as a research assistant in universities.They are also employ different parts of public sector.In addition, employment of graduate students employ as a freelance office architect, project designer, construction site architect and designer who works on the presentation (3D - three-dimensional presentation, model, etc.).

Hence architecture is a wide range working area and our instution is preferred, graduates do not have problem of unemployment.

May apply to post doctorate programmes.

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades. The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctor of Philosophy) Programme is comprised of courses (at least 67 ECTS),Ph.D.Seminar (5 ECTS), Ph. D. Research (18 ECTS) / Ph. D. Thesis (150 ECTS) courses, thesis proposal, doctoral qualifying examination and thesis examination with a total credit of 240 ECTS. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
