Course Objective

This is an introductory course presenting the fundamental theories and related concepts of space. Its objective is to present the overlaps and differences among different theoretical approaches to space within the field of philosophy, geography, sociology, art history, psychology, as well as history and theory of architecture, and facilitate discussions and a comprehensive understanding of the relationships among different layers and dimensions that construct space.

In particular, the course aims to go beyond the conceptualizations of architectural space as a perceived enclosure and seeks ways for opening our understanding of space not as a dead matter but as a living, lived, and actual world of events and thoughts constantly re-produced.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To define the multi-layered structure of the space conception
2   To be familiar with the multiple meanings of the phenomenon of Space in the fields of architecture, art, philosophy and science
3   To distinguish the periodical differences between the varying receptions of space
4   To describe the social, economic, political, cultural factors and parameters which transform the space phenomenon
5   To formulate the current theoretical approaches on architectural space by visually, verbally and in writing

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1) It is compulsory to attend classes where reading and discussions will be held every week.
2) This is a graduate seminar, in which you will read minimum 50 pages of texts each week that you may be unfamiliar and find challenging.
3) It is necessary to be prepared for the lessons by reading the weekly texts.
4) It is important that you put the necessary effort in reading and understanding the texts, which means that you may have to re-read, take notes and summarize before coming to class.
5) Re-reading may also include looking up for both terms and concepts in dictionaries and encyclopedias and for the biography of the writers for situating them in a historical and philosophical context.
6) Discussions will be held in the course under the direction of the predetermined Narrator, Recorder and Moderator.
7) The responsible are expected to write 2-page Short Assessment Texts in A4 size and send them via e-mail within the week following the lesson and upload them to the common sharing platform.
8) At the end of the semester, it is expected that the responsible will prepare a Research Homework, which will be determined by themselves and will agree with the Instructor, to examine the contemporary architectural example / figure / theme.

Assessment Criteria

* The course includes theoretical lectures given by faculty members as well as through discussions examining students' individual research and presentations.

* Students will prepare a final report on the research topic they have chosen.

* This is a graduate seminar, in which you will read minimum 50 pages of texts each week that you may be unfamiliar and find challenging.

1. It is not considered as a valid excuse to be absent in class for late submissions of assignments.

2. Late submissions will be subject to a different evaluation.
