General Description

History

The Graphic Department Master's Degree Program was fouded in 1993 within the body of DEU Institute of Social Sciences, and in 2002 it was transferred to the Institute of Fine Arts established in İnciraltı Campus. The Graduate Program of the Department of Graphic Arts continues its effects strongly with the changes and developments in the world within the Institute, which moved to Tınaztepe Campus in 2019, with regular renewals in the education and training program.

Specific Admission Requirements

It is required to have a Bachelor's Degree in the same or related disciplines, a transcript and the GPA earned in the undergraduate degree. ALES is not required for applications to graduate programs in the admission of students to the Departments of Arts and Sciences in the institutes of the Conservatory programs and the programs of the Faculties of Fine Arts that accept students only by special talent exam. Final acceptance depends on the evaluation of the relevant academic unit commission. The admission conditions of international students are decided by the Institute Administrative Board.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The courses that the student has taken and succeeded in while enrolled in the graduate program of another university, which courses will be counted from the minimum course load after enrolling in the same graduate program at Dokuz Eylül University, based on the petition of the student, the application showing the course contents and transcript chart, the recommendation of the registration advisor, the opinion of the head of the major / department and the decision of the institute board of directors. The courses taken by students participating in exchange programs from the opposite university are accepted as elective or compulsory courses.

Profile of the Programme

The Master's Program is under the name of Graphic Design Department. The duration of education is two years (four semesters). In the first two semesters of the program, theoretical and practical courses are given in which graphic design theories are analyzed and discussed. In the continuation of the process, the education is finalized with the thesis and graduation project to be completed in two semesters.

It is aimed to train graphic designers and art directors who can use their design power in national and international platforms, have developed project implementation skills, develop knowledge with design power and aesthetics, and have intellectual accumulation.

Students have the opportunity to exhibit their works, in which they transform their theoretical background into production, at the faculty or in galleries in the city.

Since the 2006-2007 academic year, student and faculty member exchange has started within the scope of the Erasmus+ program. In the meantime, the department has increased the number of bilateral agreements and it is aimed to send at least 2 graduate students abroad within the scope of this program every year.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   The student shall be able to use the practical and theoretical knowledge about graphic design and art education on master' s level.
2   The student shall have the knowledge and adequacy to manage graphic design and visual communication medias and technologies on master' s level.
3   The student shall have the power and competency to bend and manipulate the visual communication materials for expressing impressions, thoughts and messages on master' s level.
4   The student shall have practical knowledge for selecting suitable technology and the correct methodology to accomplish unique problem solving graphic design projects on master' s level.
5   On the process of creating unique end impressive graphic design medias the student shall develop visual grammar and story telling skills on master' s level.
6   The student shall have the master' s level awareness that Effective design approach is the result of the coexistence of life long hard working with research, experiments and imagination.
7   The student shall have master' s level knowledge on graphic design history, design theory and perception psychology. The student can build theoretical cross connections betwixt art history, art sociology and art philosophy during the process of understanding graphic design and visual communication history.
8   The student shall identify, investigate and explore national and universal value and status of graphic design.
9   The student shall have the skills to fallow contemporary developments of inclinations and up to date technologies on graphic design and visual communication design.
10   The student shall have the conscience and responsibility to produce in ethically and esthetically manner with a strong belief in design is a life long learning process.
11   The student shall learn to fallow different kind of recourses while designing on a high precision level.
12   The student shall have the competency to explore and express by using design the sociocultural infrastructure with interior and exterior dynamics of our environment.
13   The student shall have the competency to critique sympathetically demands and tendencies of masses whose are the consumers of graphic advertisement market.
14   The student shall have master' s level competency and knowledge to develop environment friendly design products, which can improve public space.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The Graphic Design Master's Program includes the transfer of theoretical knowledge about the field of graphic design by providing the necessary academic knowledge about the principles of scientific research to those who have completed their undergraduate education in related fields. In this direction, it is possible for the graduates of the program to apply their knowledge in academic positions in the fields they are trained in or in the design sector, either as an instructor, consultant or designer.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As a requirement of graduate education in the field of art education, courses may be completed with assessment methods such as art and/or design work and/or project and performance studies in addition to methods such as written exams and report presentations. Exams, measurement and evaluation methods and their grading may differ for each course. Detailed information on this subject can be found in the courses section of the curriculum. In addition to midterm and final exams, the student's work performance during the semester can also be evaluated by evaluation methods such as reports, assignments, seminar presentations, art and design projects and performance studies. In order for a student to be considered successful in a course, the grade must be at least 75 out of 100. The student has to take the failed compulsory courses again. If he/she fails in elective courses, he/she can take another elective course instead of that course with the approval of the web registration advisor. Seminar course, specialization area and thesis study do not have credits according to the local credit system and are evaluated as successful or unsuccessful.
Regarding exams and passing grades, Dokuz Eylül University Graduate Education and Training Regulations and Institute of Fine Arts Graduate Education and Examination Application Principles are applied. Course evaluation criteria are defined by the faculty member(s) teaching the course and given in the Course Description Form in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Students are obliged to know the relevant regulations, application principles and other regulatory provisions and principles of the institute, to show the interest and diligence expected of them to learn them, to follow the announcements made by the institute management regarding the teaching, course and exam programs, achievement status charts and other issues and published on the institute's web page.

1- In order for the student to complete the course phase in the Master's program; at least 7 courses, at least 21 local credits, 1 seminar course, at least 60 ECTS must be completed.
2- The local credits of the courses cannot be less than 21 credits in total.
3- Specialization area, seminar and thesis work are included in ECTS calculations and are not counted in local credits.
4- Courses are planned to be at least 30 ECTS in total each semester.
5- At least 7 courses, at least 21 local credits and at least 120 ECTS are required for graduation.
Students who fail to successfully complete the course phase, the credited courses and seminar course in the curriculum at the end of four semesters, or who fail to fulfill the success conditions / criteria stipulated by the higher education institution within this period; within the maximum periods, the student who fails in the thesis study or does not enter the thesis defense is dismissed from the higher education institution.
In order for the student to graduate from the master's program with thesis, at least one (1) scientific article related to his/her thesis must be published or accepted for publication in national/international refereed journals until the student completes his/her master's degree program, or national/international refereed journals about his/her studies related to his/her thesis Participation in scientific activities with at least one (1) published full-text paper or making at least one (1) art application/design in accordance with the graduate education and training regulations or having a national/international patent/utility model application for which the University is the applicant is required as a graduation requirement. In the scientific publications of the Master's Degree, the institution to which the student belongs must be shown as Dokuz Eylül University (GSE) and the student must be among the first two names. (For publications, the publication definitions specified in DEU Principles and Application Principles for Promotion-Appointment to Faculty Membership Positions are used.)
