DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Biomedical Equipment Technology

General Description

History

This program has been initiated under YÖK/World Bank Project in 2002 2003 academic year. This two-year program is composed of four semesters, each 14 weeks duration. In these two years, academic courses, laboratories and also industry based learning are educated.
Biomedical equipment technicians work in hospitals, clinics and medical canters also their task in a manufacturing plants is under the supervision of engineers. Biomedical equipment technicians are responsible for installing, testing and repairing medical instruments and equipment. Biomedical equipment technicians install, repair and maintain medical equipment such as patient monitors, electrocardiographs, blood-gas analyzers, x-ray units, defibrillators, electrosurgical units, anaesthesia apparatus, pacemakers, blood-pressure transducers, spirometers, sterilizers, diathermy equipment, patient-care computers, and other related technical devices. Biomedical equipment technicians use tools such as millimetres, soldering irons and computer software to diagnose and fix mechanical problems in medical equipment. Working mainly in hospitals, Biomedical technician also train medical staff on how to use medical equipment safely. They work with engineers and hospital staff to ensure proper functioning of equipment. So one should have good electric and mechanical skills. Patience and attention to detail are also required. Good communication skills is needed as well.

Profile of the Programme

Biomedical Technology program has been initiated under YÖK/World Bank Project in 1996-1997 academic year. The curriculum has designed to introduce the students to the fundamental concepts of biomedical applications and experiments. The students complete their practice lessons to perform their eight weeks industrial based learning in the second class (40 days compulsory). Both formal and evening educations are given in Turkish in the program.
60 students at first grade (formal edition) and 60 students at first grade (evening edition) as total 120 students are educated in the program. 1 Associate Professor and 2 Lecturers are currently working in the program. Biomedical technology program has one laboratory in the vocational school. In these laboratory, biomedical applications are done sufficiently by apparatus and devices which were supplied by YÖK/World Bank Project.
