Course Objective

To have a comprehensive understanding and advanced level knowledge about (i) proteins: structure and functions, (ii) fundemental molecular genetic mechanisms including DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene expression, genome organization, (iii) cell signaling, (iv) cell membrane: physicochemical characteristics, origins, composition, organization and functions, (v) cytoplasmic filamets: structure, organization, characteristics and functions, (vi) regulation of the ekaryotic cell cycle and apoptosis, (vii)) extracellular matrix: composition and functions, (viii) cancer.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand the structure and functions of proteins
2   To gain knowledge about basic molecular genetic mechanisms such as replication, transcription, translation, gene expression, genome organization
3   To learn how intracellular and intercellular signal transmission occurs
4   To have advanced knowledge about the physicochemical properties of the membrane that holds eukaryotic cells together, the origin, content, organization and functions of the organelles that make up the cell
5   To understand how cytoplasmic filaments organize cell organelles and their function in cell division
6   To understand how cell division and cell death are controlled, and the roles of these processes in cancer
7   To gain advanced knowledge about extracellular matrix and tissue organization
8   To describe cancer and genetic processes that lead to cancer
