Course Objective

To be able to explain the biology of stem cells and recognise the differences between stem cells and to discuss the principles and methods of stem cell based therapies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To define common features of stem cells, to explain types of stem cells, to describe differences between types of stem cells
2   To explain mechanisms with respect to stem cell biology such as differentiation, direct differentiation, self renewal, plasticity, asymmetric division, potential,..
3   To define therapeutical and reproductive cloning
4   To discuss common features and potential use of embryonic stem cells (ESC) and to learn how to produce ESC lines
5   To determine common features and types of adult stem cells (ASC) and to insight medical use of ASC
6   To understand genetic and epigenetic mechanisms behind reprogramming of fully differentiated cells and to learn common features and potential use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and to learn how to produce iPSC cell lines and what are the limitations of technology
7   To discuss biomaterials and stem cells in regenerative medicine
8   To learn regulations for cell based therapies
