Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach economics from real world examples. The practical content of this course enables students to reconcile economics theory with evidence through analyzing up-to-date real world occurrences reported in broadcast and published media.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1- Be able to put into use the theoretical tools covered in economics courses in understanding economic news.
2   2- Distinguish between news stories in terms of what fields of economics (microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, financial economics etc.) they are related to.
3   3- Evaluate economic occurrences around the world by interpreting media reports and columns in order to have a say on what s going on in the national and global economy.
4   4- Be able to write introductory level news articles that evaluate specific economic incidents in the real world.

Assessment Criteria

1. The learner will show interest in news information reported in media and participate in class discussion.
2. The learner will learn how to access sources of economic news and recognize several economics journals.
3. The learner will learn how to collect and structure relevant news information and present it professionally.
4. The learner will individually write a sample article in news/column format which covers a chosen economic event from the real world.
