Course Objective

The aim of this course is to the help the students to understand fundamental HR practices, methods, topics that would be helpful in making future HR decisions and provide useful and accurate information on HR-related responsibilities and personnel management by focusing on practical applications, concepts, and techniques can be used in business.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain what human resource management (HR) is and how managers can use HR concepts and techniques.
2   Prepare and write job descriptions, including summaries, accountabilities, job requirements, and job specifications using both the Internet and traditional methods.
3   Demonstrate understanding of the main techniques used in employment planning and forecasting.
4   Design and develop a help wanted ad.
5   Demonstrate understanding of the tests can be used for employee selection, and how to use them.
6   Describe and illustrate how to go about identifying training requirements.
7   Perform an effective appraisal interview.
8   Demonstrate understanding of the employee s manager s and employer s career development roles.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. Lecture
1. There will be lecture sessions during the first 13 weeks, and topics will include job analysis, job design, job evaluation, manpower planning, employee selection, training & development, career management, performance evaluation, compensation & benefits.
2. Individual Assignments
At the end of weeks 3 and 5, students will be invited to handle two individual assignments (on writing a job description and developing a help wanted ad) which will be delivered before week 11.
3. Group Work & Presentations
8 or 9 groups to be formed just after the mid-term examination will be invited to come together and work on different HR functions. They will present their work during weeks 13 and 14 for evaluation to provide feedbacks and improvement on group work.
4. Video
There will be 6 short video sessions during weeks 1, 4, 7, 11, and 14 and topics will include Strategic role of HR, Recruitment, Training & Development, Compensation, Labor Relations, Global HRM
5. Class discussions
Students will contribute to the learning activities by participating in class discussions.

Assessment Criteria

1. Students will clearly list the main functions of HRM and give at least 10 techniques can be used in HRM.
2. They will write a job description according to the related format and terminology after investigating a job holder. In order to do that, they will also observe, and analyze the job. (Assignment # 1)
3. Students will state the main techniques used in head-count planning and assumptions.
4. They will criticize good and bad help wanted ad examples according to `a.i.d.a. principles and prepare a proposal for a suitable one. (Assignment # 2)
5. Students will make a differentiation between structured and unstructured interviews, and know typical questions can be used for each.
6. They will describe the basic training process.
7. Students will discuss the major problems inhibiting effective performance appraisals.
8. They will discuss how to more effectively manage promotions and transfers.
9. Students will explain in a detailed way how to establish pay rates, incentive plans, and benefits.

Course Policies and Rules

1. The course will be a combination of lectures, videos, and class discussions.
2. Students should read the assigned chapters and be prepared for active participation at each session.
3. To improve their understanding and skills on HRM, students will be invited to prepare two written presentations and 1 group presentation on certain HRM topics given by the instructor.
4. Participation in class and group work is required.
