Course Objective

Targets of this course include to learn chronological,historical and literary progress of Classical Turkish Literature, to comprehend its aesthetic structure and resources, and to inform its characteristics, structure, genre and aestheticism.

1   Know the birth and historical- geographical conditions of Classical Turkish Literature
2   Enumerate general characteristics of Classical Turkish Literature
3   Know the term `Divan and technical features of Classical Turkish Poetry
4   Learn Aruz prosody and rhyme.

1 Periods of Turkish Literature, Divan Literature, denotation problems, features and borders, Definition and content of `Belagat. Works on literary theory (belagat/rhetoric) and their assessment.
2 Sound pattern in Divan Poetry. Aruz prosody; birth, progress and terminology, Selected reading texts
3 Practice on Aruz prosody
4 Practice on Aruz prosody and checking homeworks
5 Practice on Aruz prosody and checking homeworks
6 Practice on Aruz prosody and checking homeworks. Rhyme patterns in Divan Poetry
7 Mid-term Exam
8 Introduction and content of a recollected poems. Eulogy; characteristics and historical progress.Practical studies on `Güneş by Ahmed Paşa. Selected reading texts:
9 Ode; historical progress, characteristics and types. A practical study on `üstüne by Gazi Giray Han. Quatrain and verse; definition, features. Selected reading texts: Gazel , Kıt a , Nazm
10 Mesnevi; definition, historical progress, characteristics and kinds. Müstezad,rubai and tuyug; definition, characteristics and historical progress. Selected reading texts
11 Musammats (müselles, murabba,terbî, tahmîs, tardiyye, tastîr, müseddes,tesdîs, müsebba, tesbî ).
12 Musammats (müsemmen, tesmîn, mütessa, tetsî , muasser, ta sîr, terkibbend, tercî-bend) ve bahr-i tavîl.
13 Genres in Divan Literature (tevhid, na t, sâkiname vs.) and their definitions. Terms about Old Turkish Literature (istinsah, müstensih, tenkitli metin, tazmîn, nazîre etc.)
14 Final Exam
