Course Objective

This course is based on a comparative analysis for the image of West in the East and Orient in the West. In this context, firstly the relations between the Middle East and Europe are examined from a historical-sociological perspective. Then, mutual attitudes and perceptions and the underlying reasons of these perceptions are detailed through the primary readings of Orientalism and Occidentalism.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The aim of the midterm and final exams is to measure both the knowledge and the ability of interpretation and analysis. In addition to that, attendance for the lectures and weekly readings will be evaluated via the grade on active participation to the lecture.

Assessment Criteria

To be able to understand the historical background of East-West relations and the effects of this history on current images,
To be able to compare Orientalist and Occidentalist understandings and to have knowledge about their underlying reasons,
To be able to develop analysis skills by reinforcing the knowledge and course acquisitions through case studies with a group or individually,
To be able to conduct research and demonstrate analytical skills by preparing presentations.

Course Policies and Rules

1. Students must attend at least 70% of the courses,
2. Students are expected to cover weekly readings for active participation in the lectures and class-discussions,
3. Final presentations should meet the minimum criteria, required by research methods.
