Course Objective

The aim of this course,is to reveal the artistic traditions of the Byzantine Empire and is to introduce the arts works with geographical, cultural and social aspects between 4th-15th century.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding the terminology of Byzantine art
2   Learning different building types of Byzantine architecture
3   Understanding the regional and historical differences of Byzantine architecture
4   To learn about the historical topography and structures of Byzantine Istanbul
5   Understanding the historical and cultural importance of Byzantine cultural heritage and creating awareness of protection

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definition of Byzantine Art and its emergence on the world and in Türkiye. Periods of Byzantine Art.
2 Information about the organization and the city of Constantine, panorama of the Istanbul in Byzantine period. Istanbul Land walls (with visual materials).
3 Istanbul Forums: History and Architecture,Istanbul Hippodrome, historical phases Its History and Architecture (with visual materials).
4 First Churches in Byzantine architecture: Basilicas. The adaptation of basilicas, which were court and meeting places during Roman era, to Christian architecture. Construction materials techniques. (with visual materials).
5 Plan type and description of the terminology of the Church, the church, liturgical space, and staff understanding of the examples. (with visual materials).
6 Classification of Basilicas according to cover systems. 1. Hellenistic Basilicas: Examples from Italy and Greece (with visual materials).
7 Vaulted Basilicas: Churches in Karaman and Karadağ. Plan characteristics and general features of this type. (with visual materials).
8 Midterm exam
9 Domed Basilicas: Emergence, definition, architectural features. Constantinople/Istanbul Hagia Sophia Church. Construction process under light of The Buildings of Justinian by Chronicler Procopius, and material usage (with visual materials).
10 Buildings with Central Plan: General information. Plan types and functions.Examples from Italy(with visual materials).
11 Iconoclasm period and building activities (with visual material).
12 General information about Churches with Closed Greek Cross Plan.
13 Churches with Closed Greek Cross Plan in Istanbul Monasteries
14 Late Byzantine Architecture and construction activities, access information about culture and art of this period.
15 Late Byzantine Architecture and construction activities, access information about culture and art of this period.
