Course Objective

The structure and function of nerve cells, nerve conduction, functional structure of the nervous system, the basis of neural control mechanisms

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define the structural and functional sections of the nervous system
2   Define the structure of a neuron and describe the functional importance of its main regions
3   To be able to define the support cells of the nervous system and explain the brain blood barrier
4   To be able to explain the electrical potential of the cell membrane
5   Define the depolarization, repolarization and hyper-polarization of the cell membrane.
6   Explain the formation and properties of the action potential
7   To be able to define the structure of the synapses and synaptic transmissions
8   To be able to define neurotransmitters and their effects
9   To be able to explain spatial and temporal summation
10   To be able to define long term potentials and their importance
11   To be able to explain neural control mechanisms
12   To be able to associate physiological basis and mechanisms of disease

2 Ion gates, intracellular and extracellular ion dispersion
3 Electrical potentials in the cell membrane
4 Voltage-gated ion channels and action potentials
5 Characteristics of action potentials, refractory period, all or none principle
6 Types of synapses, transmission of information from one cell to the other
7 Excitatory and inhibitory potentials
8 Types and functions of neurotramsmitters
9 Synaptic plasticity
10 The formation of long term potantials
11 Synaptic inhibition
12 Clinical examples
13 Assignment presentation
14 Assignment presentation
15 Final week
