Course Objective

The aim of the lecture is to teach how to design and test the simulation models.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Identifying the problems that can be solved using simulation techniques and being able to solve them.
2   Have a basic knowledge of simulation as an analysis tool for predicating the effect of changes or as a design tool to predicate the performance of a new system.
3   Have ability to use simulation programming structures.
4   Have ability to design of the simulation models,
5   Have ability to test of the simulation models.

Course Contents

1 Introduction to simulation. Steps in a simulation study
2 Simulation examples: queuing systems, inventory systems and other examples
3 The event scheduling/time advance algorithm, manual simulation using event scheduling
4 Lists: basic properties and operations, using arrays, dynamic allocation and linked lists for list processing
5 History of simulation software, selection of simulation software
6 Statistical models in simulation, review of terminology and concepts
7 Useful statistical models
8 Discrete distributions
9 Continuous distributions, Poisson process
10 Characteristics of queuing systems: system capacity, the arrival process, service times and the service mechanism
11 Properties of random numbers, techniques for generating random numbers, tests for random numbers
12 Random-number generation techniques
13 Analysis of simulation data Verification and validation of simulation models
14 Simulation Applications

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format. Besides the taught lecture, group presentations are to be prepared by the groups assigned and presented in a discussion session. In some weeks of the course, results of the homework given previously are discussed.
