Course Objective

Read and interpret topographic and geologic maps

1   Recognize the elements of the topographic map.
2   Read and interpret topographic and geologic maps.
3   How to Know the relative age and relative positions of the layers on the geological map.
4   In a location shown on the geological map, which can detect could cut formations by drilling
5   To perceive around drilling area as three-dimensional.

1 Types of maps and map
2 Topographic map elements (scale, Map Name, Description, Direction)
3 Topographic map elements (coordinate systems)
4 Read topographic maps (contour plots, the height of a point, the map distancebetween two points, the real distance, difference in elevation between two points, slope steepness)
5 Topographic cross-section
6 Introduction geological maps
7 Definition of floor and ceiling planes and the locations of the geological units
8 Morphology of intersections of planes
9 Midterm exam
10 Directional lines, meaning
11 Calculation of the plane pozition with the drilling data, and layer thickness problems
12 Geologic cross-sections and applications
13 Examination of the geological structures with map and cross-sections.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be done of theoretical lectures in classroom, and besides this will be in the form of implementation issues on topographic and geological maps. Each sample solutions and applications related to the subject will be enough. Examples of creating a debate on the teaching of subjects will be provided as well.
