Course Objective

The aim of this lesson is to enable students to acquire sufficient knowledge and skills with the following topics.

Definition and history of microbiology
Microbial groups and their properties,
Microbial flora,
Disinfection and sterilization,
Microbial genetics and metabolism,
Microbiology laboratory instruments,
Preparation and staining methods,
Media and cultivation techniques
Colony characteristics,
Antibiotic sensitivity tests

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knows the definition and history of microbiology, microbial groups and their properties.
2   Knows the microbial flora and its features.
3   Know and apply the methods of sterilization and disinfection.
4   Obtains information about microbial metabolism and microbial genetics.
5   Acquires skills about using a microscope, preparation and staining methods.
6   Acquires knowledge and skills related to media and cultivation techniques,
7   Acquires skills implementation and evaluation of antibiotic susceptibility tests.

2 Cell structure, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell characterictics General characteristics of bacteria and fine structures
3 General features of viruses and fine structures General features of fungi and fine structures
4 Nutrition and production of micro-organisms
5 Between microorganisms, microorganism - the environment and the organism relations The resident flora and transient flora The normal flora of the body (skin, upper respiratory tract, lower respiratory tract, GIS, genitourinary system, etc.)
6 The effect of the external environment on microorganisms, sterilization, disinfection, antisepsis definition Sterilization methods and use, sterility control
7 Disinfectants, mechanism of action and the methods of disinfection application
8 Microbial genetics (DNA and RNA structure) Virus Genetics Bacteriophages
9 Microorganisms in the modifications (changes in phenotype, mutation, genotypic changes) Mechanisms of gene transfer
10 Metabolism of microorganisms and enzymes Fermentative metabolism, respiratory metabolism
