Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the basic knowledge of chemical laboratory and to get practices of issues within the scope of General Chemistry-1 course.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to apply the laboratory work rules.
2   To be able to prepare appropriate solution depend on the desired concentration units.
3   To be able to make applications of separation and purification methods.
4   To be able to determine the empirical formula of a compound that the percent composition is known.
5   To be able to calculate the efficiency of synthesis reaction of a compound.
6   To be able to specify the applied methods of a solid sample recognition.

1 General information and rules of the laboratory and preparing solution.
2 Separation and purification methods, simple distillation and its application.
3 Fractional distillation and its application.
4 Extraction and its application.
5 Chromatography and types of chromatography, paper chromatography and its application.
6 Crystallization and its application.
7 The law of definite proportions and its application.
8 Mid-Term Exam
9 Synthesis of copper sulfide and determination of the emprical formula of a compound.
10 Synthesis of Aspirin and yield calculation.
11 The properties and preparation of solutions.
12 The law of Graham diffusion and its application.
13 Determination molecular weight of sulfur by the method of cryoscopy.
14 Recognition of solid materials.
15 General repetition and compensation experiment.
