Course Objective

The aim of the course is to introduce the fibre properties, yarn properties, yarn production methods and woven fabric production technologies used in woven fabric production in detail.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To have knowledge about materials to be used in fabric design
2   To learn the kinds of raw materials and their basic manufacturing techniques, to be used in design
3   To be able to predict how material properties will affect the fabric he/she will design and to be able to select materials
4   To be able to select required technological equipment to produce the fabric he/she will design.
5   To have knowledge about basic and auxiliary motions of the weaving loom and the mechanisms that take place in these motions.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Information about the course. The importance of recognizing raw materials and production tools in the design and production process. Important fiber properties for yarn production & Classification of Spinning Technologies
2 Basic processes for yarn formation. Purpose, tasks of the blowroom process and the introduction of the machines.
3 The purpose of carding, drawing, combing processes. Presentation of the machines.
4 The purpose of preparation for combing, combing, preparation for spinning and the introduction of the machines.
5 The purpose of the spinning process and the introduction of different spinning machines. Presentation of various yarn production systems (ring, open-end, compact, sirospun, etc.). Doubling, twisting and winding processes.
6 Yarn Count Systems. Example
7 Intermediary examination
8 Definition and properties of woven fabric. Basic and supplementary movements of the Weaving Process. The basic structure of the loom.
9 Auxiliary Movements in Weaving Process
10 Shedding systems: Tappet shedding system.Dobby shedding system. jacquard shedding system.
11 Weft insertion systems.
12 Preparation to weaving: Warp preparation systems and machines. Waeving Plans (Drafting, pegging,color plans)
13 Production technologies of complex woven fabrics: Towels
14 Production technologies of complex woven fabrics: Velvets and Velveteens

Course lectures, display of samples of fibres, yarns and semi-finished product forms of these in classroom, which are basic weaving materials, interactive discussions and examination

Assessment Criteria

Evaluation is made as based on a 100 full grade point and the grade point of success is 50. A grade point of 50, at least, is required in the final examination.
