Course Objective

In this course it is aimed to teach definition of knitting, classification of knitting machines, knitting elements, functions of knitting needles and cams, the formation of knitting fabric.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand the formation of knitted fabrics on knitting machines,
2   Have an ability to understand the technology of knitting machines
3   Understand the effect of machine technologies to the fabric properties
4   Have the ability to relate the machine parameters and the machine settings to the production capacity and the quality properties of the fabrics,
5   Able to know different knitted fabric structures.

Course Contents

1 Definition of knitted fabric (weft-warp knitted fabric), classification and properties of knitting machines and their products.
2 Basic knitting elements. Knitting needles
3 Basic knitting elements. Knitting cams
4 The formation of knitted fabrics on one needle bed of the machine
5 The formation of knitted fabrics on two needle beds of the machine
6 The other positions of the knitting needles (miss, tuck and transfer positions) .
7 The other positions of the knitting needles (miss, tuck and transfer positions) . Formation of purl fabrics
8 The practical studies about the formation of knitted fabrics produced on V bed hand knitting machine
9 1. midterm exam
10 The parameters of circular knitting machines - Single bed circular knitting machine
11 Circular knitting machines - Double bed circular knitting machine
12 Jacquard systems in weft knitting machines
13 Yarn feeding systems and take down mechanisms
14 Knit fabric faults

The production of knitting fabrics and the knitting technology are explained to understand how the knitting patterns are obtained.

2. Workshop

The practical studies are about the formation of knitted fabrics produced in one needle bed and two needle beds of the V bed hand knitting machine
