Course Objective

The source of textile designs starting from the antique periods till 17th century , their historical development , cultural interaction , composition properties of designment , stilizations , plans for practice and symbolic meaning will be supported with visiual materials will be studied .

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand the source of ancient period designs , development in history , composition properties of designment , plans for practice and symbolic meaning
2   Review on design repertory of antique civilizations and interaction in between
3   To learn the symbolic senses of universal textile designs in different cultures from antique period till nowadays
4   To distinguish the stilizations and turn on phrases of fashion designs
5   To catch the term /period of design and designment properties , to understand the practice plan
6   To have the knowledge on properties of textile designs , their story of development and the knowledge about the period they arouse and can combine all this design appl,cations practically

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Design , pattern decoration , stilization and style determinations . Information about pattern decoration in ancient times . Textile design sources and development during ancient civilizations .To examine pattern and and design properties of styles by periods.
2 Design properties and development in ancient Egypt , in style approach , pattern and designment properties.( papirus, palmet, lotus )
3 To search the pattern and design properties , development in Mesopotama civilization ( Sumerian Assyria ) by taking into consideration styles of this period
4 Animal styles , sources , main subject properties and interaction /interactive relation , the importance in design history of sphinx, gryphon design s
5 Search for design and pattern projects of Greek and Rome civilization properties , development and interactive relations .Akantus , meander , lotus, anthemion and palmet and designs through antique period and interactive relation
6 Search for design and pattern projects of Persian civilization properties in the light of development and interactive relations .Geometric tangled designs, floral designs which are charasteristics of Persian culture ( life tree ) and stilizations togather with animal patterns .

9 Anatolian Seljukian design properties and embellishingdecoration and what is syncretism Eagle pattern that is a special feature of the period , two headed eagle ,cufi , 8 cornered star, etc. , designs that supported visiually
10 Review of properties on Ottoman fabric designs and subjects
11 To teach the design plans used on Ottoman fabrics and repeated systems supported visiually
12 Design styles of Ottoman Period Bulrush Road Style , naturalist style supported visiually
13 Floral and zoological based designs used in Ottoman period and their symbolic meaning
