Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the first binding samples in Islam, the schools used in these samples, the relationships among them; the Arabian, Persian, Indian and Turkish binding samples in domestic and overseas museums and libraries, and the decoration features in these samples.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   have technical knowledge and information about the first samples in Islam geography
2   have designing knowledge seen in binding samples in Islam geography
3   make use of the schools seen in Arabian, Indian, Persian and Turkish bindings, and use them in designing stage
4   use the decoration techniques in different Islam binding samples in their own designs
5   make an original binding design in accordance with the academic knowledge they have gained in educational period and visual sources.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The students are expected to determine binding samples of different periods in various libraries and museums after being instructed about related main sources. They will be asked to make a presentation so as to have a good command of research methods, and to make a comparison and interpret on the knowledge they have gained. They will also realize an original coloured binding design by making use of the homework bindings.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The detailed researches of binding samples from various museums and libraries will be presented in comparison with different samples. Besides, the students creativity and originality in original design which has been realized after academic researches will be considered.

Assessment Criteria

Mid-term exam, final exam, presentation and project will be evaluated out of 100 and the average will be assessed out of 100. 80 % attendance is compulsory.

Course Policies and Rules

After the theoretical knowledge will be given both orally and written, the practices will be made one-to-one with the students. The students are informed about the next lesson s subject and are expected to make a pre-study about it.
