Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the students the illumination features of kıta and murakka in Illumination Art, the improvement in the history of Illumination, styles and the artists having styles in Turkish Illumination and their artefacts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   have information about important artists and their artefacts in Turkish Illumination Art,
2   identify the styles of the artists in Turkish Illumination Art, compare them, use this special information and experiences to design patterns,
3   make original designs in the cult of Şah Kulu,Baba Nakkaş, Ali Üsküdar by using illumination features in different periods in Turkish Illumination,
4   use the knowledge from different disciplines in their design patterns while making artistic connections related to the cults in Illumination Art and while creating their designs,
5   make use of computer technology while creating compositions and researching motifs in the studies related to Turkish Illumination Art, and also apply the information in their projects.

1 Create original designs with the help of the historical improvement of Illumination; the kıta and murakka illumination samples; styles, and samples in the artefacts of the artists having styles in Turkish Illumination Art.

4 Baba Nakkaş and his illumination characteristic in Turkish Illumination Art
5 Şah Kulu and his illumination characteristic in Turkish Illumination Art; Ali Üsküdari and his style in Turkish Illumination Art
6 Making original designs in the cults ( Şah Kulu ) using illumination features belonging to different periods
7 Murakka albums and kıta panels in Turkish Illumination Art
8 Imperial orders and certificates in Turkish Illumination Art
9 Hilye-I Şerif ( writings, books and paintings describing our prophet Muhammed s qualities ) in Turkish Illumination Art
10 The illumination features of celi writings in Turkish Illumination Art
11 Preparing original designs using the features of Panel illumination
12 The techniques used in Panel Illumination

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In this course, we will systematically analyze the illuminated areas in kıta and murakka, which are the common practice areas of illumination; we will teach the design methods by introducing related disciplines and samples; and, the designing, its kinds, methods and techniques will be taught in workshops. Original designs will be drawn suitable for the fields in question by using one or more illumination methods in accordance with general design principles and techniques applied in illumination. Computer technology can be used in assignment, planning and designing stages and presentation. The students will be evaluated according to their using skills in their assignments and projects.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

This course involves 2 theoretical course credits; and 2 practical course credits. In the educational year, both a mid-term exam and a final exam are given to the students so as to make them comprehend the course content during the lessons. By means of the exams, how much information given by the books and notes has been grasped, and at what degree the practices related to the designs have been turned into skills will be evaluated. The students will be supposed to prepare an assignment and present it in the course systematics they have grasped.
It is important for the students to attend classes because they can improve their drawing skills and because this applied course is the main course of the discipline the students related to. So, the attendance will be taken into consideration.
At the end of the term, by considering ethical, systematic, organizational and esthetical principles, each student will represent his project with a file including project stages.

Assessment Criteria

Exams will be evaluated out of 100. This grade will be determined according to the number of the questions to be asked in the exams. And also, the project, the assignment presentation and the attendance will be evaluated out of 100.

Course Policies and Rules

The students coming to class late will be accepted into the class but are considered to attend half class period. All attendance will be scored as mentioned above. At the end of each course, the next lesson s subject is given to the students as study and research subject. Each lesson starts after discussing the study and research subject before teaching it.
