Course Objective

The aim of this course is to inform the students about the resources and the materials used in Analysis of Manuscripts course. The students are also informed about the concept, the physical structure, the writing and the copying of the books together with samples. The written works and domestic and foreign libraries will be introduced. Furthermore, the students will be informed about classical book form and reading skills.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   know resources and materials about analysis of manuscripts,
2   be informed of the book, its the physical structure and writing and copying the book,
3   know the domestic and foreign libraries together with written works according to their themes,
4   have the information about the classical book form, and reading skill,
5   convert the knowledge and skills about analysis of manuscripts into competence.

2 What is a book The book concept in the Koran
3 The physical structure of the book ( paper, ink, writing, cover etc.)
4 The terms used for the writers, such as musannıf, müellif,muhaşşi, muharrir etc.
5 The terms used for writing a book, such as classification, compilation, composition, explanation, postscript, translation etc.
6 Copying the books: copying by hand, copyist, edition, booklet, etc.
7 Classical book form
8 Written works in terms of language: Arabic, Persian and Turkish
9 A general assessment of written works according to their themes
10 The Koran sciences, the Koran
11 The hadiths, history, Sufism, Islamic laws, literature, medicine, calculation
12 Handese, philosophy, logic, sarf-ı nahiu
13 written work libraries: domestic library samples

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In this course, the terminology, historical development and kinds of calligraphy, and especially the connection between illumination and book arts about the written works will be taught based on sample works. The concept of the book will be emphasized, and the terms and expressions about the physical structure, the writing and copying of the book will be taught. Sample reading exercises will be done as well as the information about the classical book form. Domestic and foreign libraries of written work will be introduced and a library will be visited.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

This course involves 2 theoretical course credits. In the term, the students are given both a mid-term exam and a final exam on the purpose of having them comprehend the content of the course in the lesson. Through the mid-term exam, we will evaluate how much the students have comprehended the knowledge in the course books and notes and to what extent they have achieved the reading skills. By the 40 % of the mid-term and 50 % of the final exam the students will be evaluated in terms of knowledge and skill. Attendance will be evaluated 0ut of 10 %. This evaluation criteria is for the first term.

Assessment Criteria

The exams will be evaluated out of 100 and depending on the number of the questions, which will be announced before the exams. The total grade will be identified and evaluated by the answers.

Course Policies and Rules

The lesson starts with the theoretical introduction of the related subject and visual letter anatomies. The students coming to class late will be accepted into the class but are considered to attend half class period. All attendance will be scored as mentioned above. At the end of each course, the next lesson s subject is given to the students as study and research subject. Each lesson starts after discussing the study and research subject before teaching it.
