Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce the students to an analysis of the concepts of democracy, democratization and democratic consolidation. The first part of the course will first concentrate on the concepts of democracy in depth and then second part will examine the democratic transitions and their reversals in the world. The third and last part of the course will focus on the factors such as the state, political parties, civil society, civil-military relations, socio-economic factors and external actors that have an impact on democratic consolidation by concentrating on case studies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Gain an understanding of concepts democracy, democratic transitions and democratic consolidation.
2   Identify factors (state, political parties, civil society, civil-military relations, socio-economic factors and external actors) that both hinder and enhance consolidaiton of democracies in various countries.
3   Analyze the process of democratic consolidation of various states by examining the factors mentioned above.
4   Design and write a research paper in order to analyze the democratic consolidation of a specific country.
5   Work effectively as a part of a team and individually.
6   Demonstrate analytical skills in writing and presenting a report.
7   Acquire the skills to use library and internet resources independently.

15 percent of the final exam (which is originally 40 percent) is allocated to
the term project that consists of a long paper and a presentation.
5 percent of the midterm exam (which is originally 20 percent) is allocated to
short assignments written before the midterm exam.
