Course Objective

building cinematography as a language takes time by repetitons of some visual (also audiovisual) techniqes that the audiences accept them as visual codes. especially mainstream cinema and popular genre films use these codes or some special codes for their own genres. these codes will be defined in sociological, psychanalitic, cultural, semiological, antrhopoligical and political contexts and also they will be determined in same contexts. and the goal of the course is the students in film creation department get the point in defininng and determining these production and analysing meaning in audiovisual codes.

1   having ability to realize relations between cinema and producting visual codes
2   having information about the basic film analysing methods
3   comprhending the relations between visual codes and genre cinema styles
4   comprehending the relations between culture and cinema
5   difference of uses of visual codes in mainstream cinema and modernist cinema

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

in this course, first of all, studetns will be informed about the beginning of cinematography that it was building as a language. The most important movies which takes a place in history of cinema as creating visual codes. they will be analyzed as finding visual codes in. and then movies will be shown for each film analyzing methods. that is expected the visual codes in these films will be encrypted with these analyzing methods. at last the modernist movie examples which changes the meaning of more famous visual codes andcreate new meanings and also nez audiovisual codes will be shown.

in midterm exams it is expected that student have realized that the meaning of visual codes. in final exam. it will be expected that they are able to analyze a film with the right analyzing method and could find the visaul codes in it.

the main criteria is having ability to find the visual codes in a film.
