Course Objective

This course aims to find anwers the questions of what is the nature of ethnicity, how is ethnicity politicized into nationalism, what is the nature of nationalism, how does nationalism often lead to political violence, what are the dynamics of political violence, and finally, what strategies can the central state use to deal with violent ethnonationalist movements

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explore theoretical and conceptual literature addressing nationalism and violence
2   Examine the conflict triggered by economic and cultural competition as well as fear and insecurity.
3   Articulating the connections between identity construction and violent ethnic conflict
4   Explore the types of ethnic violence--war, riots, and genocide--and the mechanisms and processes implicated in such violence.
5   Use library and internet resources academically.
