Course Objective

The ability to understand arrangement methods for musical material in various ensembles, including the symphony orchestra, in conjunction with related theoretical information

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The ability to arrange a musical work for orchestra in the proper style Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary;
2   The ability to understand the characteristic timbral qualities of string, wind and percussion instruments;
3   The ability to determine which instrument or instrumental group is best suited for assignment to a melodic, harmonic (accompanimental) or bass line function according to timbral and musical qualities;
4   The ability to apply timbre and balance principles to sound and chord voicing;
5   The ability to explain the different orchestration techniques and styles associated with Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century music;
6   The ability to reduce an existing orchestral work to its most basic form through the elimination of doubled voices.
