Course Objective

The course intends to enable students to develop a sociological perspective on the interrelations among the artist, the perceiver and the artwork itself. It is designed to build a sociological insight in order to benefit the students when creating or criticizing art.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to discuss/debate fundamental principals pertaining to art and sociology.
2   to establish sociocultural approaches to art and the artist.
3   to analyze relationship between social structure and art.
4   to be able to analyze the elements of social structure
5   to interpret popular culture and art debates from a sociological point of view.
6   to be able to benefit from Sociology of Art as a critical approach to art and any related subject.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Course is not geared towards memorization but rather encourages students to debate among themselves with examples and analization, including visual and verbal communication. Students are to develop critical thinking and analyzing skills based on reading materials. They are also required to participate in class.
