Course Objective

This course aims to make students able to recognize rhythmic modal and melodic music and able to analyse samples of modal music through, genres, forms and lyrics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Indicate the type and format of the maqam-modal music,
2   Explain the relationship between lyrics and melody,
3   Analyse samples of Turkish classical music in respect to maqam-modal, lyrics and rhythmic patterns,
4   Compare samples of Turkish classical music culturally and socially,
5   Evaluate changes and the conditions of change in the samples of Turkish classical music.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Instructor will explain the types, genres and lyrics of maqam-modal music through printed notes and audio samples. Changes in maqam-modal music and interaction of it with the other music types will be emphasized.

Attendance in the course:
The score to be obtained from the student's attendance depend on a) attendance status of the course, b) the quality of the students answers to the questions asked by the instructor during the course, c) the quality of the technical, formal and oral narration in the presentation and (d) the contrubition of the student to the creation of the positive learning environment.
