Course Objective

The aim of this course is to acquaint the students historical information about cultural, stylistic and technical features of Popular Music genres and subgenres.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe to cultural, stylistic and technical features of Popular Music genres and subgenres which appear from 1900 s to the present.
2   Defind to musical features of Popular Music genres and subgenres which appear from 1960 s to the present and recognize transactions between them,
3   Describe to stylistic reflections of Popular Music genres and subgenres which appear from 1960 s to present genres,
4   Defind to local and global dynamics of music practises in the case of popular music.
5   Defind to variable musical concepts in Popular Music practises,
6   Execute a research using with related literature.

1 Introduction: social and political ambient in America on 1970's; Vietnam War and influences on Rock.
2 Documentary: "NTV Pop Çağı" episode 1 Documentary: "NTV Rock Müziğin Yedi Hali"
3 First half of 1970's: Soft Rock and movement of singer/song writer.
4 Economic crisis in America (1975) and Arena Rock.
5 Reggae and global influences.
6 Second half of 1970's: Punk.
7 Second half of 1970's: Funk and disco.
8 Heavy Metal and Extreme Metal: history, musical features, subgenres and styles.
9 Music video,visualization of music and pop trends in 1980's.
10 Introduction to 1990's and Alternative Rock (Seattle Sound)
11 Experimental Rock, styles of Experimental Rock and Indie Rock
12 Midterm Exam
13 Club (cultural and musical characteristics, tecnology , subgenres and styles).
14 Hip-Hop culture ve category of R&B-Hip-Hop.
