Course Objective

Getting historical information about cultural, stylistic and technical features of Popular Music genres and subgenres.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define the important moments of Jazz history,
2   Decribe the styles and performance tecniques in Jazz,
3   Describe the performance tecniques and harmonic features of Jazz music as part of periodic characteristics of Jazz history
4   Describe the concepts of Jazz music (groove, laid-back, blue note, chorus, poliritim, senkop, turn arround etc.),
5   Describe the contributions of important musicians to the Jazz .

1 Introduction: origins of Jazz.
2 Black orchestras, minstrels and Blues
3 Blues and Boogieler.
4 New Orleans in early 1900s.
5 Dixieland and Chicago in 1910s and 1920s.
6 Swing in 1930s (terms and characteristics).
7 Bebop in 1940s.
8 Cool ve Hard Bop (terms and characteristics) in 1950s.
9 Free (term and characteristics) in 1950s.
10 Midterm exam.
11 1960s and 1970s; Latin Jazz and Post Bop (terms and characteristics).
12 1960s and 1970s; Funk and Soul influence in Jazz.
13 European Jazz in 1970s and ECM sound.
14 Traditional styles in 1980s and Experimental streams. 1990s; Smooth Jazz, Acid Jazz and Nu-Jazz.
