Course Objective

The aim of this course is to explore cultural and musical aspects of Turkish popular music from the historical perspective.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:
2   discuss the matrix of popular culture in the context of Turkish case from the historical perspective, and, recognize the relationship between popular music practices and other aspects of popular culture in Türkiye,
3   explain that there is an important relatioship between international popular music forms and Turkish popular music styles,
4   discuss Turkish arabesk with its socio-cultural dinamics and its musical components in detail.
5   explain the orientations and tendencies of Turkish popular music in relation to official and commercial mass media
6   recognize the relationship ideology and music in the context of popular music practices in Türkiye (ülkücü (nationalistic), devrimci (revolutionary ) and Islami (islamic) pop.
7   discuss Rap and Metal music in Türkiye in the glocal axis

8 Tavern in Türkiye in the context of space-music
9 The commercial mass media in Türkiye
10 Popular music and ideology: `ülkücü' (nationalistic) pop and 'devrimci' (leftist) pop in Türkiye
