Course Objective

To enable the resident to consolidate the theoretical knowledge on radiotherapy physics through clinical practice

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to learn the features of immobilization systems in radiotherapy and use them;
2   Ability to use CT-simulator;
3   Ability to perform contouring of organs using computerized treatment planning systems
4   Ability to perform conventional and conformal radiotherapy treatment planning;
5   Ability to perform patient set-up and maintaining the accuracy of the set-up by means of checking the compatibility of the set-up with the treatment plan;
6   Ability to use brachytherapy systems;
7   Ability to perform quality controls of imaging, treatment planning and treatment devices and equipments;
8   Ability to make relevant cerrobend blocks, immobilization masks, bolus, etc. required in the radiotherapy of patients

Course Contents

1 Information about head and neck immobilIzation systems, acquisition and transfer of CT images
2 Organ contouring in head and neck region, formation of basic treatment plans, working on DRR images
3 Conformal treatment planning in head and neck cancers, transfer of the treatment plan to the treatment device, performing patient set-up
4 Information about breast board, pelvic mask, under-knee support and foot immobilization systems, acquisition and transfer of CT images
5 Formation of conventional and conformal treatment plans in patients with breast cancer, genitourinary and gynecological tumors.Transfer of the treatment plan to the treatment device, performing patient set-up in breast cancer, genitourinary and gynecological tumors
6 Information about immobilization systems used in lung cancer and lymphoma, conventional and conformal treatment planning, transfer of the treatment plan to the treatment device, performing patient set-up
7 Information about immobilization systems used in pediatric tumors, conventional and conformal treatment planning, transfer of the treatment plan to the treatment device, performing patient set-up
8 Acquisition of images, formation of treatment plans, application of the treatment plan to the patient in brachytherapy
9 Quality control of brachytherapy systems
10 Daily quality control of linear accelerators, quality control of Co60, information about safety equipment in Co60, radiation accident drill (scenario of lack of Co60 source movement)
11 Performing manual dose calculations
12 Formation of cerrobend blocks and assembly of the blocks onto plexiglass trays, making immobilization masks for patients, learning about bolus materials (wax, gel, rice, powder, etc.)
13 Detecting environmental radiation level using radiation measurement devices
14 Compensation of the deficiencies
