Course Objective

The aim of this course is to study the spatial and socio-economic dimensions of the globalization process, and to examine the economic development and welfare disparities between regions of the world by doing so.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Develop an understanding of core concepts and theories that enhance comprehension of regions and the global political economy.
2   Explain the geographical dimensions of development and globalization in order to interpret how directly resource and factor endowments are linked to economic development.
3   Evaluate the effects of the ongoing globalization on economic development and regional disparities.
4   Define the major international institutions such as WTO, World Bank, IMF who play important roles in the globalization process, in order to explain the effect of their policies on the regional scale.
5   Develop an understanding of the rapid urbanization processes that take place in developing countries and how these relate to regional development.

Assessment Criteria

1. The learner will be able to apply economic tools to analyze globalization's effect on regional economic development.
2. The learner will be able to distinguish between the core and periphery characteristics on the global and regional scale.
3. The learner will present his/her ideas in an organized manner written and orally through assignments.
4. The learner will define the socio-economic dimensions of development and globalization in order to explain sources of and possible aids for regional disparities.
