Course Objective

The purpose of the course is to teach postgraduate students on the mechanisms of intracellular signal transduction and cell death pathways that determine the fate of a cell. For this purpose, the course begins with the cell cycle lecture that controls cell proliferation and death, followed by cell signal transduction pathways that can be activated by various external and internal factors, and ended with different cell death mechanisms that lead the cell to death. At the end of the course, an increase in the query and research ability on therapeutic approaches for degenerative disease is targeted.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   LO1-Has basic knowledge of cell biology to understand cell signaling mechanisms (PO1, PO2).
2   LO2- Associates and presents intracellular signal transduction and cell death mechanisms(PO5;PO6,PO7,PO8,PO9,PO10).
3   LO3- Access and use information and databases related to the course subject (PO8,PO9).
4   LO4- Can understand cellular mechanisms underlying diseases with the knowledge gained from the course (PO6, PO7, PO9).
5   LO5-Has the ability to plan a research for degenerative diseases at the molecular level (PO9, PO10).

1 Cell cycle, its control and its relationship with cell death.
2 G-protein coupled receptor mediated signal transduction
3 Serine Kinase receptors signal transduction pathways: TGF-b / SMAD3 / SMAD4 .
4 Cytokine receptors: JAK / STAT signal transduction.
5 Tyrosine kinase receptors and the Ras / MAP Kinase signaling pathway
6 PI3-Kinase and PTEN mediated signal transmission
7 Ubiquitins and signaling pathways that control protein degradation-I: WNT / HEDGEHOG / NF-KB.
8 Signaling pathways controlling that control protein degradation-II: NOTCH / DELTA / SREBP.
9 Mid Term Exam
10 Cell Death and Signaling Pathways-I: Apoptosis, Necroptosis
11 Cell Death and signaling pathways-II: Autophagy, Ferroptosis
12 Cell Death and signaling pathways-III: Entosis, Paraptosis, Partanatosis, Mitoptosis, Pyroptosis.
13 Altered signal transduction pathways in cancer cells and their relationship with cell death pathways-I: EGFR, MAPK / Erk, PI3Kinase / Akt / mTOR, cMyc, HIF-1, P53, NF-Kb.
14 Altered signal transduction pathways in cancer cells and their relationship with cell death pathways -II: JAK / STAT, TGF-b, WNT, NOTCH
15 ER stress, Misfolded protein stress and mitochondria mediated signal transduction pathways in aging and neurodegeneration.

Assessment Criteria

1. Theoretical knowledge of cellular signaling pathways and cell death mechanisms will be evaluated with midterm, final exam and oral presentation (PÇ1, PÇ2;PÇ5,PÇ6,PÇ7,PÇ9,PÇ10).
2. The ability to apply the information learned, the ability to access and interpret the necessary databases will be evaluated with assigment / presentation (PÇ8, PÇ9).
