Course Objective

Within the frame of this course, the following topics and concepts are inteded to be discussed at an advanced level:
Historical aspects of enzymology, nomenclature and classification of enzymes, concept of substrate specificity and mecanisms, coenzymes, types, accociated reactions and role in metabolism, control of enzymatic reactions, , enzimatik aktivitenin kontrolü, velocity of enzymatic reactions, chemical kinetics, enzymatic kinetics, inhibition and types, effect of pH, bi-substrate reactions, derivation of Michaelis-menten equation; mecanisms of enzyme catalysis, enzymatic reaction mecanim using the lysosyme example; serine proteases; drug desing, introduction to pharmacology, introduction to clinical enzymology

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learn enyzme definition, classification, general properties of enzymes, enzyme catalysis and catalysis mechanisms at an advanced level
2   Be able to transfer knowledge about basic enzymology to different conditions
3   Understand the different catalysis types and discuss them using different examples
4   Gain skills for transfering basic enzymology information on drug design
5   Starting with enzyme inhibition types, be able to analyse events taking place in the organism and compare the basics of different applications of enzyme therapy
6   Understand the use of different enzymes in clinical enzymology
7   Using the information learned as well as searching new information, prepare and make an oral presentation on a topic in enzymology

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to Enzymology- basic concepts, Enzyme nomenclature and classification of enzymes, Chemical kinetics, Enzyme kinetics, Enzyme inhibition and types, Problem solving- enzyme kinetics, Use of enzymes in Clinical Laboratory- General principles, Enzyme localisation- Use of enzymes in therapy This activity will take place on the first day of the first week.
2 Three-dimensional imaging of biomolecules and enzymes-Introduction, Imaging of three-dimensional structure of enzymes using J-Mole (I), Imaging of three-dimensional structure of enzymes using J-Mole (II), Imaging of three-dimensional structure of enzymes using J-Mole (III), STUDENT PRESENTATIONS- General Discussion (Whole Group) This activity will take place on the second day of the first week.
